ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?
Reading through this page, you may feel called to one of the several opportunites for service at St. Olaf. If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please fill out this form.
Saint Olaf Church is a community-oriented parish which serves the Lord in many ways. One facet of the calling to serve includes the parish's many volunteer programs.
Sunday School of Religion
The Sunday School of Religion offers religious instruction for students in pre-school through eighth grade. Volunteer catechists and aides, using age-appropriate religious texts, provide the basics of our Catholic faith. This is a challenging and rewarding experience for those who volunteer to pass on their faith. This program prepares our parish children for First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. The program also prepares older children for Baptism in the Catholic Church. Commitment: one academic year.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)
Children older than eight years of age who are not baptized and wish to become members of the Catholic Church are enrolled in this program. Their formation as Christians is a process of spirituality and study let by a capable staff of volunteers. Commitment: one and a half hours per week for at least one academic year.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
RCIA is a process of inquiry by which adults are introduced to the Catholic faith and our community. It is an informal environment in which the inquirer is encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussion about the Catholic faith. Focus is on prayer and practical application of God's Word in daily life. Volunteer facilitators introduce the inquirers to the faith through topical discussion. Volunteer sponsors guide the inquirers along their journey by praying with them and sharing life experiences. Commitment: for the facilitators, one and a half hours per week; the needs of the inquirers dictate the requirement of the sponsors.
Eucharistic Adoration
This is a ministry of devotion spent in solemn adoration of the Holy Eucharist. Like the links of a chain, the list of adorers must be continuous. The Blessed Sacrament cannot be on display to an empty chapel. Hours of adoration are 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, except holidays. Vacancies for volunteers are always available. Commitment: one hour per week.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
Also referred to as "Lay Eucharistic Ministers," ministers require a strong devotion to Jesus Christ in administering Holy Communion. Ministers distribute Communion at Masses and deliver Communion to the sick and home bound. Commitment: one Mass per month or delivery to the sick and home bound at your own discretion.
Lectors
Lectors proclaim the word of the Lord during the Mass. Those who volunteer carry the word and share in the essence for which the Mass is offered. Christ's mission on this earth to spread the word of the Father. Commitment: one Mass per month.
Altar Servers
Altar servers provide a continual service to our entire community. All children enrolled in the Sunday School of Religion or in a Catholic School, in fifth grade or above, are invited to become altar servers. Training is offered in the Fall. Commitment: two Masses per month.
St. Olaf School
An expression of Jesus' mission, the educators of St. Olaf School strive to make each child aware of their purpose in life through the vocation of teaching. St. Olaf School believes parent involvement is necessary for success of any educational program; we therefore ask parents to give a minimum of 30 hours per year volunteer time. There are many opportunities to fulfill those hours.
Youth Ministry
Volunteers to the youth ministry endeavor to help youth become faithful servants of the Lord and good citizens of the world. This ministry focuses on meeting the core needs of the community through prayer and worship, evangelization, catechesis, pastoral care, community life, peace and justice, and leadership development. Volunteer opportunities include: chaperone to an event, facilitate a meeting, to be a keynote speaker, to help plan a liturgy or prayer service, and to serve on a fund raising committee. Commitment: six hours per month.
Grief Ministry
Volunteers support and help people cope with the death of a loved one. The group provides assistance with planning funerals, working with the funeral director, preparing the wake, selecting scripture readings, music and flowers for the funeral Mass. Commitment: twice per year.
The Pastoral Council
The council is a group of parishioners who are nominated by the council and elected by popular vote of the parish. These members advise the pastor and serve as a communication conduit through which policy and information flows. This is an advisory council to the pastor. Term of office: three years. Commitment: one hour on the second Sunday of every month.
Ladies of Charity
The Ladies of Charity respond to the needs of the poor by distributing food to low income, homeless, or unemployed women, providing contact to social workers, assisting with medical expenses, providing vouchers for food, clothing, and rent, and pursuing many other courses of service. From assisting those in prison to responding to natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the Ladies of Charity show the truthfulness of their name. Commitment: eight hours a month.
Council of Women
The St. Olaf Council of Women acts through its affiliated organizations to support, empower, and educate all women in spirituality, leadership, and service. The council's projects include and are not limited to: the Fall Luncheon, Saint Martha's Baby Project, Christmas Stocking Stuffer, and general membership meeting featuring keynote addresses by prominent community leaders. All women in the parish are welcome and encouraged to become actively involved in this outstanding and vital organization. Commitment: four meetings per year.
Knights of Columbus
A fraternity of Catholic gentlemen dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The Knights work to fulfill the central mission of the order providing charitable work, serving the parish, supporting the temporal and spiritual needs of brother Knights, acting for the good of country and giving aid to the sick and poor. Commitment: two to three hours per month for meeting and service commitment.
Coffee and Donuts Fellowship
This is a ministry of hospitality, fellowship, and community. After each Sunday Mass this ministry serves coffee, donuts, and is the catalyst that brings the parishioners together in an informal and hospitable place. Volunteers may set up tables and chairs or may provide the pastries and coffee. Commitment: one hour per week.
Entertainment Night
Together with the annual School Auction, these are the most important fund raising events for the parish. The chairpersons for each of these events serve a unique and challenging ministry that is surpassed only by the challenge of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Commitment: approximately six months of preparation and dogged determination.
Annual School Auction
This event is held yearly and is a major fund raiser for the school. Many volunteers are needed to make this night a success. You may commit to a few hours or more as you are able. All are appreciated.
Girl Scouts
In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop leadership skills, strong values, and a social conscience that will serve them all their lives. There are several troops at St. Olaf that are affiliated with the South Davis County Chapter. The girls range in age from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Commitment: eight hours per month.
Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts
Scouting has weaved a lifetime of values into fun and educational activities designed to help parents teach their sons how to make good decisions. Scouting teaches each boy to do his best to be helpful to others. Volunteers may become scout leaders or may volunteer to help with individual events. Commitment: eight hours per month.
Play Group
A group of volunteer moms who serve in support of other moms with young children for friendship and fellowship. Meetings take place every Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in a park during summer or in a home during winter. This is an opportunity for moms to interact with other adults and defray the stress of baby-sitting.
